Football Betting - How to Read Odds?
ref: wikihow, les transferts, oddspedia, tylekeo247
If you bet on sporting events, you must be able to read odds and understand what they mean.
Odds tell you the likelihood that an event will occur (a team wins, a boxer makes it a certain round) and how much will be paid out if you win. While there are different ways to write odds, they all indicate how likely one outcome is in comparison to another.
Ex: If there is an 80% chance of rain one day, then there is a 20% chance it will not rain as well. The odds are 80 to 20. Otherwise put, it is four times more likely that it will rain than stay sunny.
Lower odds return a higher profit. Betting on the underdog is riskier than betting on a favorite, but a higher risk means a higher potential reward.
European style
Odds at the track tell you amount of profit you will make per dollar spent.
- ex: Odds of 3/5 indicate that your profit will be three-fifths of a dollar. In other words, for every $5 you bet you can win $3 in profit. That is, If I successfully bet $15 on a horse with 3/5 odds of winning, the payout would be $24 ($15 + [15 x 3/5])
One of the most classic betting proposed by the european bookmakers is Home/Draw/Away (HDA)
- ex: take a look at any football bet proposed by William Hill
- Portugal v Ghana, Home 1/2, Draw 11/5, Away 10/1
- if I bet $10
- on Portugal to win this match, my profit is $10 * 1/2 = $5
- on Ghana to win this match, my profit is $10 * 10/1 = $100
- on a draw match, my profit is $10 * 11/5 = $22
- if I bet $10
Asian handicap style
A handicap means giving more weight to something in favour of one team.
In handicap betting, you will only see two handicaps. The weaker team is given the plus symbol while the stronger team has the minus symbol.
This form of betting helps compensate for the difference between the two teams by giving the stronger team a x-goal deficit.
Some typical type of asian handicap betting
- Handicap Half Lines (0.5 / 1.5)
- Half lines are different from full lines because they have a value that ends with a
.5
- Betting with the +0.5 half line means that the team you place a bet on starts the match with a 0.5-goal lead. This means that you get to win if the team wins or there is a draw. However, if the team loses, you lose the betting
- Half lines are different from full lines because they have a value that ends with a
- Handicap Quarter Lines (0.25 / 0.75)
- Quarter lines have a value that ends with a
.25
or.75
- If you bet on
0.25
it means that you will win if the team you bet on wins. If the team loses, you lose the bet and in case the match ends in a draw you get half of the stake.
- Quarter lines have a value that ends with a
